Our Research,

Accomplishments,
&
Present Goals

SoilSerdem is a research and development (R&D) startup out of Iowa State University and is currently funded by a National Science Foundation (NSF) grant.  The company aims to provide the agricultural community with soil informatics and mapping technology that works with their existing hardware and equipment. We want to remove the barriers to entry for precision agriculture, allowing anyone to participate in the way that’s best for them.

SoilSerdem has completed SBIR Phase I, successfully demonstrating the feasibility of its innovation, mapping roughly 3,000 acres of Midwestern row cropped farmland (Iowa, Illinois, and Missouri).

We recently earned an SBIR Phase II grant to continue our R&D efforts across multiple cropping systems and to benefit soil environments across the US.  Contact us if you would like to join!

What We Do

The Phase II project will build upon the foundation of our Phase I feasibility research results. The overall goal of the SBIR Phase II project is to more broadly demonstrate and fully validate the efficacy of our soil mapping system through field trials across more diverse crop rotations/systems.

SoilSerdem will offer its complete solutions from a cloud-based platform. Our resulting maps will be compatible with farm management solutions lending to seamless integrations. Finally, they will be scalable to match users’ hardware specifications and needs.

What We Map

We map the gamut of soil properties including macronutrients (OM, pH, P, K, CEC), micronutrients (S, Zn, B etc.), soil texture, and soil health metrics (C:N, CO2 burst, H3A extractions and water-soluble nutrients). We map soil texture with a 36-bin resolution (coarse sand, medium sand… medium clay, fine clay) as opposed to the standard 3-bin (sand, silt, and clay), lending to more detailed and specific analysis.

Participate in our Study!

We are in search of growers that are interested in assisting in our project. Participants provide SoilSerdem permission to sample their fields and time to talk with them about their agronomic practices.

Our grant covers the research costs, soil sampling, analysis, and mapping.
Once our analysis and mapping are complete the results will be available to the participants without cost. It's a win-win for researchers and participants!

Why We Need Growers

We need commercial growers to participate in our research. Oftentimes, results from plot trials are not applicable to real field scenarios. We want to continue working in real fields with everyday management practices.

What SoilSerdem Asks from Growers

Participants are asked to provide SoilSerdem permission to sample their fields and time to talk with them about their agronomic practices. As part of the study, we will reach out to participants to review and discuss the sample information and soil fertility maps. Once our analysis and mapping are complete, the results will be available to the participants without cost. The grower will receive soil analysis, high resolution soil maps, and soil recommendations based on accurate, trustworthy data.
